Ben's Chili Bowl - Half-smokes and Chili dogs in Arlington, VA

1725 WILSON BLVD
ARLINGTON, VA 22209
Tel: 703-649-5255

Ben's historic credentials in Washington, D.C. are unquestionable. Its new suburb locations, however, are another story.

Situated in a Wilson Blvd strip mall, in a place that once housed both Ray’s the Steaks and Ray’s Hellburger, Ben’s has a Washington Redskins colored interior blazen with cultural stories and photographs on the walls. The feel here is far from the urban half-smoke chili dog iconic joint that Ben's photographs project. In other words, it was waaaay too sterilized and clean in this North Arlington location. Typically, a clean, well-lit restaurant is a plus, but the spirit of that urban downtown inner-city image of Ben's was simply lacking.

We came here for lunch on a Saturday to a mostly empty dining room and empty counter area.  Their famous menu items included their well-known half-smoke with chili, chili bowls, burgers, dogs, fries, veggie burgers, turkey dogs, potato salad, cole slaw, and homespun milkshakes complete the limited menu.  We ordered the half-smoke with chili, a turkey burger with all the fixins, cheese fries, regular fries topped with chili and a vanilla milkshake.

The food was a disappointment. It was pretty bland and tasteless.  If not for about a quarter bottle of Pete's hot sauce available on each table to help spike the flavor, the turkey burger and half-smoke with chili were just something to chew on.  The lukewarm fries wilted after a few minutes under the heavy tasteless chili and cheese.

The bright spot of the meal was the milkshake.

Having had to forego chili-topped items at the Nationals’ Stadium during baseball games, we were so looking forward to enjoying the messy stuff in the comfort of restaurant seating instead of worrying about splattering chili on a fellow spectator in the ballpark stands.   Bottom line…plain was better.  Ben’s chili just did not impress.

The place did fill up pretty quick after we arrived.  The lady who took our order was cheerful and welcoming, but was not helpful in making recommendations or describing items on the menu. Insult to injury, they were out of cole slaw and potato salad that we would have been preferred, forcing us into the fries.

We would be remiss if we did not give Ben's big props for offering the options of a turkey burger, a veggie burger and even meatless chili for those who are not big meat eaters. This is particularly commendable for an eatery known for its meat-oriented menu.

We are glad that Ben's came to Northern Virginia. But without the iconic feel, the food just wasn't something we'd return for.

Parking is at a premium at this Arlington strip mall area

PIZZA RANKING IN NORTHERN VIRGINIA! TOP THREE PICKS!!! WINNER: The Italian Store; FIRST RUNNER UP: Ciro's New York Pizza in Centreville, VA; SECOND RUNNER UP: Tony's NY Pizza in Fairfax, VA

We are both from the New York - New Jersey area, so needless to say the only pizza we acknowledge is New York pizza. Other well-known pizzas, like Chicago, may place high in the pizza hierarchy, but New York pizza rules undoubtedly rules, in our humble opinion.

If you perused our last blog, you'll know we're on the subject of the best New York pizza in Northern Virginia right now, which we believe to be The Italian Store in Arlington. Hands down, period, end of story.  See our previous post for a detailed description.

Out of all the pizza joints we tried this summer, we followed friends' recommendations and carefully sorted through the criteria for a true New York pizza to find those that come close. After numerous taste tests, our two runners up: Ciro's New York Pizza in Centreville and Tony's NY Pizza in Fairfax.

OUR RANKING AS IT STANDS TODAY:

1. The Italian Store

2. Ciro's New York Pizza

3. Tony's NY Pizza

Unlike The Italian Store, which is our #1 choice for as-close-as-you-get-to-real New York pizza in our area, Ciro's and Tony's are primarily restaurants, with a large carry-out business.  They offer large seating areas with staff who bring out the food to your table once you order and pay at the register.

Other than the location (only 4.5 miles between the two), there isn't much difference between Ciro's and Tony's in quality, service or price points.  BOTH ARE VERY GOOD AND OFFER GREAT VALUE. We have eaten pizza and subs at all three of our ranked restaurants, as well as others, so this ranking is for food only, since we have never eaten AT The Italian Store, only taken out, we are not rating service. The only thing we can say about service is that for the most part, we have not had any issues at any of these places, other than a small hickup at Tony's, which we will write off as an anomaly.

Here are our dining experiences in photos. We'd love to know YOUR ranking! DO YOU AGREE? DISAGREE?  Drop us a line via email, leave a comment on our blog, Tweet us or leave a comment on our Facebook page!

The Italian Store - Italian Market with Sandwiches and Pizza - Arlington, VA

Lyon Village Location
3123 Lee Hwy
Arlington, Virginia 22201

Westover Location

Arlington, Virginia 22205

If you love New York pizza as much as we do, then this is the place for you. Hands down, The Italian Store's pizza is the closest you will get to real New York pizza in this area by far.  We have tried a few other places, which we also liked, but this is by far our #1 choice.

Side note: As our loyal readers already know, we are from New Jersey (Northern Noo Joisey). Well, one of us was born and raised, the other lived extensively both in New Jersey and New York City. Northern Jersey is considered by many, maybe all, insiders and outsiders alike, to be a New York suburb. Not only do so many people from New Jersey commute daily to their jobs in New York City and so many New Yorkers come to shop in New Jersey (where there is no tax on clothes), but more importantly, the attitudes and outlooks are typically pretty similar across the state border in this particular area. In New York City, folks from New Jersey are known as the Bridge-&-Tunnel Crowd. Like most NY - NJ ex-pats, we are constantly (some may even say annoyingly) comparing the taste and quality of pizza, bagels, and food in general between where we grew up and the rest of the country. The point of this paragraph is to convey to our readers that when we say "New York pizza," it's actually an abbreviation of NY - NJ pizza. Now getting back to the restaurant we are reviewing.....

We first tried this pizza at the Lyon Village location in Arlington about a decade ago, and knew immediately that the owners had to be from NY. You can read their story on their website. Our staple - the Extra Large Cheese Pizza.  We've also gotten it at their second location in the Westover neighborhood in Arlington, but found it to be not as much to our liking as the one at the Lyon Village. The seasoning and crust are consistently different, and we prefer the way they do it at the Lyon Village.

Each slice is yuuuge. Just tap a napkin on the cheese to absorb a few drops of the extra oil, fold the slice in half, and bada bam! You're walking down the street in Noo Yawk!

Incidentally, this is the only pizza that we can both order without requesting any changes on different halves and both enjoy it equally. One of us (Bill) loves extra cheese, but not extra sauce; the other (Elena) loves extra sauce, but not extra cheese. Here, we get no extra anything - you got it, we change nothing - and we are both happy.

We have gotten a couple subs from them over the years and they have been just as good, but it's the pizza that we crave on average once a month.

P.S. Still no good bagels in Northern Virginia, though.....

The Portofino Restaurant - Italian Restaurant in Arlington, VA (Revisited)

526 23rd St S, Arlington, VA 22202
(703) 979-8200

Perfection! If you have not been to Portofino in Crystal City, don't walk, run there.  They are a family-owned restaurant (since 1970!) and this certainly comes through in the solid quality of food and service.  Everything about this restaurant is wonderful.  We have eaten here 4 or 5 times (first reviewed here in 2010) and each time can't wait to return. There is so much thoughtfulness, seamlessness and warmth that is conveyed to the customer through each dining experience, we cannot help but think that this is probably the way all restaurants should be.

To begin with, in an area where parking is at a premium, the parking lot behind the restaurant alleviates the time and frustration it takes to park on the busy 23rd Street.  When entering the restaurant from the parking lot through the back door, you are immediately greeted by the owner and manager welcoming you to the dining room through the office / bar area.  There are two dining rooms in Portofino - one with about 15 tables in an ornate (but not over the top, fortunately) atmosphere and one down the stairs toward that back that is huge and seemingly always busy on a weekend evening.

The menu lists everything that you could ever want to eat at a fine Italian dining establishment, but wait... the manager personally comes to your table and describes the specials, which for us included two different asparagus appetizers and a half a dozen mouthwatering entrees so creatively designed and so deliciously described that it's hard not to order one of everything just to try.  While we were listening to the specials, ice water and freshly-baked bread were served at our table.  There is something about the olive oil set in a bottle on each individual table that somehow was different from most olive oils and was a particularly flavorful dip for the bread.

We had the calamari appetizer that came with a thick spicy dipping sauce with a hint of horseradish.  In addition to the plentiful selection of food between the menu and the specials, Portofino always accommodates any special requests.  Ours was a Puttanesca capellini, which was fantastic.  We also had the Veal Parmigiana that was smothered in a marinara sauce and cheese with a side of vegetables - all heavenly.

Prices were quite reasonable, too.  The calamari was $8.95, the Puttanesca was $14.95 and the Veal $20.95.  Most other similar restaurants of this caliber typically charge much more.

For dessert, we could not resist sharing the ricotta cheese cake that came in a mild and tangy lime sauce, topping off an excellent meal. Of course with a frothy capuccino.

While the wait staff were all very attentive and friendly, we could not write this review without mentioning one of the greatest assets of Portofino - Julio, a waiter who has worked there for 28 years.  He starts off by joking that this is his first day on the job, fooling you for about a second, and then it's clear he is highly versed in what he is doing.

Thank you for a lovely meal, Portofino! And again, we can't wait to return.
